Freaky Hailstone weather Blast and Torrential Rain Bempton East Yorkshire
My good UA-cam friend Chris sent me these video clips of the depressing 'summer' weather they had yesterday. Our Belfast weather has also been very poor with rain clouds overhead every 2 hours and frequent temperature drops. We even had storm conditions for an entire day last Thursday!
I'm so glad we didn't have hailstones like Chris got!
What has happened to our spring and summer weather?

Ulster Scots Words See How Many You Recognize

Here in Northern Ireland we live very close to Scotland. Crossing the North Sea the distance in many places is only 18 miles. On a good day you can easily see Scotland. Centuries ago when Ulster was carpeted in thick impenetrable forest it was easier and safer to travel to Scotland by small boat to trade, than to try and travel across wooded glens and cross rivers, to reach other Irish settleme...

This is so interesting Tom, there were one or two words i recognised and probably a lot of these words have been a part of different dialects and slang and passed on through time ,my mum who was from Wales quite often referred to us as Eejit's if we'd done anything silly,LOL, and the sad think is today a lot of this has been lost as generations have died out. Great stuff Tom.

@TomMcClean Hi Tom It's great to hear these old but often used words. Being a Ballymena man myself but working not far from Ballycastle, you often hear the Ulstet / Scots words being used, especially in the out laying villages. Wonderful to hear and always brings a smile . Many thanks for reminding folk of these treasured but not forgotten words of our great heritage.

We went from Scotland with Maynes Holidays Buckie last week. The hotel is lovely and yes, the tunnel is convenient to get to leisure complex; since the new road was made from Belfast to Dublin the road directly outside the hotel is quiet now but it would have been very busy in the past. Thank you for sharing your film on UA-cam.

Hi Sottish Lassie. I hope you had a grand time. Yes we too enjoyed our wee stay. We used the tunnel to get to the magnificent gardens and outside bar/restaurant area. Carrickdale is a very popular stopping off point for coaches. We used to go over to Scotland quite often. We still have 2 nieces and nephew living near Edinburgh. We toured round the Scottish borders region and I did a lot of UA-cam videos on it. Fabulous towns and villages. The car ferry prices have really gone up though. Maybe we should do a coach tour! Many thanks for your encouragement. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

Hi Keith. Some of the words have been lost or changed over the centuries and over huge distances. It's fair to say that their usage would be more prevalent in eastern parts of the United states for that's where most Scots Irish landed and settled. Doing fine but just a little more tired and sore but ok thanks.

My Gran used most of these. She was from Dromore, County Down, but lived in Castlereagh for the most of her life in Ardpatrick Gardens and then moved to Bangor, County Down where she spent her remaining years. We’ve tried tracing the family but so far we have only reached the late 1800’s and cannot seem to go back further. We just don’t know where to pick up the next part of the trail…

Hi KJ. It isn't easy tracking long gone ancestors. Talk to all the still living elderly relatives. Check out old family photograph albums. Check out the 1911 census here to see who is named on it as living in the same hose. Go to Dromore and find the cemetery or the church she might have attended. They should have a register of deaths births and marriages that you could ask to look at. Go down to PRONI and ask for help and advice. ( Northern Ireland Public Record Office. ) Were any of your male relatives in the forces in WW1 ? They have extensive records.

Dear me, Tom. Heritage museum in Ballygowan? My dad was from there, up the road at Magherascouse. I used to be there a lot on visits to my cousins at the family farm. I remember going there on the train and when they stopped, the bus. After that by car & push bike and also motor bike! Dad went to school there, the big building with the clock (Time is Short). Cheers. Jim.

Many thanks Chris. It is totally remarkable what Raymond has collected over the decades. The trouble is that he has all the knowledge about each item in his head. When he dies the whole collection will probably be broken up and sold on. It is likely much of it will be sold across the sea and lost to Ireland north or south. I have another 2 videos to go. I eventually ran out of battery life! lol Raymond can talk for Ireland north or South! lol

Good one Tom. I like foxes, but over here they are a feral pest and hunted. Some states have a bounty on them. All introduced plants & animals exploded into huge headaches for state & federal governments. Jim.

Thanks Shaun. I was trying to get as much in as possible. i'm afraid I moved around far too fast in the third video in particular. The unfortunate thing is that this collection will probably be broken up and sold on when Raymond dies. Much of it will likely end up lost to Belfast as it will go across the water. Raymond remembers everything about each item. all the stories will be lost too when he goes. Video 3 and 4 soon to come. lol

@TomMcClean there's a lovely forest park around the corner from me. Called Glenn Forest Park. It has wee characters in it that kids love. There's also a kind of community centre (I think) there are tables outside, I've never been inside. I know they have activities there like ziplining. I keep meaning to check it out myself. It's lovely just for a walk

Not to tell you how to live your life but perhaps your son or daughter should make other arrangements for their kids rather than dump them on the old man. You need rest to recover from your episode and the stress of looking after rug rats doesn't help. Btw, it's not the middle of June, it's the 170th of January. Hang in there.

Ah Goober. I very much hear what you are saying. We are probably too soft. We love seeing the wee ones when so many friends can't, because they live so far away, but it is tough at times. I had next to no good memories of any of my grand parents. It's great to have an input into their lives to help try and mold them for good. Yes our weather is indeed like autumn or even winter. I wouldn't be surprised to be told that the Met people/'experts' are experimenting with it. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

Tom, this was brilliant! What a dine collection, and what a great little video - hats off to you my friend. A few minutes into the video I spotteds the placards and signs with the "M-S" logo, and straightaway knew them as Munster-Sims, because they were the first company I worked for when I left school, and they were dealing as a hardware/kitchen/china wholsale company in Prince Regent Road. I started with them 1//1/62 and my first wage packet was £2.3s.3d - not a lot for a forty-hour week, but I got to see the whole of NI in the two-plus years I worked there. I thoroughly enjoyed this video Tom and could have spent another hour watching more, so well done that man!

It was only recently that a friend gave me Raymond's number. I was delighted to get doing this video walk round. There is so much history here. Sadly it will probably be sold off in bits to whoever, when he dies. I will doing a part 2 very soon!

@@TomMcClean Another thing that struck me was an expression you used that I haven't heard for years, and it jogged my memory banks to add a rhyme that I learnt as a child. Boys uh boys I found a penny, boys uh boys I picked it up, boys uh boys I bought a bap, boys uh boys it made me fat! Funny how a simple word or phrase can bring back a 65-year childhood memory, Lol.

Yes Reg I wonder where I picked up the boys oh boys phrase. It was very common in round Banbridge when I was growing up. It probably came from that wee ryhme.
